Direct answer: In TicketLater’s August 1, 2026 catalog snapshot, the typical live-event ticket started at $83.67 all-in. That median covers 28,026 priced upcoming sports, concert, theater, and comedy events — not face value alone, and not a guarantee for any one night out.
This report is the pillar for TicketLater’s 2026 affordability cluster. It ranks categories and leagues, flags affordable and expensive cities, shows how lead time relates to starting prices, and explains the Live Event Affordability Index (45.1 nationally). Deep dives live in the spoke articles linked throughout — including cheapest NFL tickets, cheapest MLB tickets, concert ticket costs, and last-minute pricing.

The national price picture
Across the full catalog, half of priced events started at or below $83.67. The mean ($116.20) sits higher because a long tail of premium tours, marquee sports, and thin-inventory nights pulls the average up. The interquartile range — P25 $52.67 to P75 $128.73 — is the more useful “typical night out” band for planning.
Under-$50 inventory is real but not the majority: 23% of events cleared that bar, and only 6.7% started under $25. Still, 60.8% of listings started under $100 — so a three-figure from-price is common, not inevitable.

Ticket prices by category
Category is the strongest first cut on affordability. Sports dominate the under-$50 share; theater posts the highest median among the four buckets.

| Category | Events | Median | % under $50 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sports | 6,318 | $43.55 | 54.9% |
| Concert | 10,176 | $76.08 | 19.9% |
| Comedy | 2,083 | $85.72 | 9.3% |
| Theater | 9,449 | $114.62 | 8.1% |
Sports are the clear budget entry point: more than half of sports listings started under $50. Concerts sit near the national median — see how much concert tickets cost in 2026 for city and artist detail. Theater is the hardest category for sub-$50 entry, with only 8.1% clearing that threshold.
Major league medians
Within sports, league medians still span more than 2× from the WNBA to the NFL. League rollups use official TicketLater teamSlugs — not free-text league tags — so counts reflect roster-matched games.

| League | Events | Median starting price |
|---|---|---|
| WNBA | 278 | $44.70 |
| MLB | 1,610 | $56.73 |
| NBA | 588 | $58.46 |
| MLS | 2,072 | $60.08 |
| NHL | 1,440 | $65.23 |
| NFL | 393 | $97.43 |

Most and least affordable cities
City medians mix sports, concerts, theater, and comedy in each market. Among major markets with meaningful sample sizes, Midwestern and select Southern California cities posted softer starting prices; dense entertainment capitals and destination markets ran hotter.
| Market | Events | Median | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indianapolis | 158 | $57.21 | Affordable major market |
| Anaheim | 95 | $57.31 | Affordable major market |
| Des Moines | 188 | $61.89 | Affordable major market |
| Las Vegas | 1,876 | $124.93 | Expensive destination market |
| New York | 2,440 | $140.97 | Largest expensive metro sample |
| Honolulu | 48 | $152.13 | Highest median among highlighted markets |
City medians include all priced categories in that market. Mix matters: a baseball-heavy city can look cheaper than a theater- and residencies-heavy one even at similar venue quality.

Lead time and starting prices
In this cross-sectional snapshot, near-date events often listed cheaper starting prices than far-out inventory. The 2–7 day bucket had the lowest median at $61.16. Events 61+ days out posted the highest median at $92.84.
That is a comparison of currently listed from-prices by horizon — not the same event tracked over time. Hot tours and marquee nights can still spike last-minute. Full analysis: Are last-minute tickets cheaper?

Family-night cost context
A simple four-ticket proxy (4 × median starting price) shows how quickly a family night scales — especially in the NFL versus bargain MLB clubs. Category and league choice matter more than almost any other lever for a family of four.

For the dedicated breakdown of family-of-four estimates across leagues and clubs, see family of 4 ticket costs in 2026.
What this means for ticket buyers
The 2026 snapshot does not say live entertainment is “cheap” or “expensive” in the abstract — it says the typical all-in entry sits near $84, sports still offer the widest under-$50 inventory, and timing plus market choice can move you tens of dollars before you even pick a section.
- Start with category. Sports median $43.55 vs. theater $114.62 is a larger gap than most seat-map upgrades.
- Pick the league deliberately. WNBA and MLB remain the softest major- league medians; NFL sits alone near $97.
- Use geography. Indianapolis, Anaheim, and Des Moines medians near $57–$62 contrast with New York and Honolulu above $140.
- Stay flexible on date. The 2–7 day window showed the softest median starting prices in this snapshot.
- Compare all-in totals. Every figure here is a buyer from-price, not a teaser face value.
If spreading payments matters more than paying in full, review buy now, pay later tickets. BNPL does not lower the ticket price; it only changes when you pay when checkout enables a lender.

Methodology
This report analyzes TicketLater’s Typesense events catalog as of August 1, 2026. The universe is upcoming events with hasFromPrice=true and fromPriceCents > 0 — 28,026 priced events in total.
Price definition: fromPriceCents is the cheapest available buyer all-in ticket for the quantity-2 browse default, including applicable TicketLater markup and estimated fees. It is not face value, not the average seat in the venue, and not a package price.
League matching: League rollups require official teamSlugs from TicketLater team rosters. Free-text league tags are not used for medians, so noisy or miscategorized tags do not inflate counts.
Live Event Affordability Index: 0.55 × (% of events under $50) + 0.45 × (100 × (1 − median / $300)), with components capped so the index stays on a 0–100 scale. Higher scores mean more affordable. The national score on this snapshot is 45.1.
Lead time: Buckets compare current from-prices of events at different horizons in one snapshot — not the same event tracked over time. Family-of-four proxies multiply a team or market median by four; they are not contiguous family packages and do not guarantee adjacent seats.
Prices and inventory change continuously. Always open the live event page for the current all-in total and seat map before you buy. TicketLater is an independent ticket resale marketplace for sports, concerts, theater, comedy, and other live events.
